Welcome to the first edition of ADDICT NOTES, a monthly look back at what’s happening here on the site, what’s coming here on the site in the next month or so, and just general ‘happenings’ that I want to use this space to put out into the universe.

A first edition of looking back at a site that’s not a lot going on for the last few years other than a few failed restarts and a pretty dang good podcast – BOOM! Addiction – close down after 10+ years of talking about BOOM! Studios comics is going to be a little hard to do, but I think I can manage. I’ll start out by saying ‘thank you’ for coming back to the site. I won’t go into the history of Comic Addiction, but it’s been a wild ride to say the least and one that, in hindsight, wish I had managed a little better than I did. But, that being said – I’m ready to see what happens next and I hope you are, too.

This first month or so of the site will be a lot of me trying to get my footing again with writing reviews and opinion pieces. I have personal goals I’d like to meet, but I don’t want to talk about those in detail until I have met a few of them. The fact I’m writing this on June 5, and not before June 1, gives you a first impression that I’m not meeting my own deadlines. That’s not true. I’m more worried about writing things down than I have been in years. When you talk on a podcast, you just talk. You have things planned to a degree, but you’re really just responding in the moment and I tend to do better when I just talk and then go into detail as I talk out loud. I hate doing a solo podcast because there’s no one to question what you’re saying, and writing all of this down is a lot like a solo podcast. Plus, I’m left looking at the page and wondering if there is something else I could, or should, say? Should I edit something out? Do all of these words actually make sense? All of these things never happen when I’m talking out loud on a podcast, so this will be interesting.

Let’s talk a little about expectations here. Now, I said I’m not ready to discuss my personal goals with the site, but I do have some things that are penciled in hard enough that they look like ink marks. One, is this monthly piece. I think I can manage this, and get it out within the first couple days of the month. Another will be reviews. Reviews, for the time being, will just be what I’m reading. I’m planning on making it mainly about first issues, or possibly the first and second issue for a few. I want to get in on the ground floor on some new series and I want to bring all of you along with me. I had wanted to do a podcast like this, but I think doing it like this will help me get back into writing on a regular(ish) basis. A podcast might spin out of it somewhere down the road, but I wouldn’t expect it any time soon.

Another part of the site I want to work on is more of a personal project – collecting comics. I have a dozen or so comic book series that I’m collecting and I want to talk about those series and how the collecting part of this hobby is going for me as I get closer to finish some out and really start to dive into others. I have wanted to do something like this for a while. If you’ve never read Mark Ginocchio’s Chasing Amazing blog (https://www.chasingamazingblog.com/), I highly recommend it. It is one man’s journey to own all of the issues of Amazing Spider-Man (but not the annuals). He completed this journey many years ago, but it still inspires me. What will those titles be that I talk about? I’ve got a lot that I could pull from, but we’ll have to wait until I’m ready to write about them before you know which ones. Maybe you want to guess, or make suggestions. I’m open to that if you’d like. Find me on Twitter/X and DM me or just tag me. I’m sure I’ll see it and I will definitely appreciate the interaction.

I have other ideas, but that’s all they are – just ideas. I don’t want to overwhelm myself to get out of the gate. I’d rather add new stuff as I’m comfortable with what I’m already doing here on the site, and build from there. I know you’re already asking “but what about a podcast”? Maybe. I’ve already mentioned the possibility of one in this article, and there’s always potential for others. I’m never without an idea or the desire to do another podcast, but I need to take things at a reasonable pace.

To close out, I’m excited for the next month here on the site as I get settled. Comic Addiction has always had a special place in my life and it has brought many people in and out of my life. Some of those people remain good friends to this day, and others I lost communication with and always want to find ways to mend those fences, even to say ‘hello’ from time to time. If you’re interested in following along with me on my daily adventures, you can follow me on Twitter/X. I’m on a lot of other social media platforms, but that’s where I’m the most active.

Thank you, and have a great rest of your month!
