FINAL COUNTDOWN – FOC Due 1/6/2020

4 min read

Welcome to the first edition of the FINAL COUNTDOWN at Comic Addiction!

Each Friday I will bring you my Top 3 comics, variants, trades, and hardcovers that are of the Final Order Cutoff for that following Monday. Yes, I know today is Monday, but I wanted to squeeze this one in for the first FOC of 2020. I will have clear dates (the banner of each post will have the Final Order Cutoff page with the due date) on each post and will probably refer to that date a few times in the post. This Top 3 list is not the complete list of comics that are on the FOC page, and I HIGHLY encourage all of you to go to that page (here's the LINK). If you have any questions about the FOC page, feel free to ask me or your local retailer.

The FOC for today's Top 3 list is January 6, 2020. Please check in with your local comic shop for how they handle FOC. I am NOT the end all be all expert for FOC, so ask your retailer. OK. I think that covers it, let's dive into this week's list!

First on the list is VAGRANT QUEEN PLANET CALLED DOOM #1 from Vault Comics. This is the second miniseries from Maggs Visaggio's VAGRANT QUEEN universe and picks up where the first miniseries concludes. This miniseries is drawn by Jason Smith, colored by Harry Saxon, lettered by Zakk Samm, and designed by Tim Daniel. The first miniseries was amazing and when I heard there would be a second miniseries I immediately added it to my order.

If you're unfamiliar with VAGRANT QUEEN, the series about Elida who was forced from her throne when she was ten years old. She has been on the run from revolutionary forces that would like to see her dead. She comes to find out where her long-lost mother is and embarks on a dangerous rescue operation.

This series is also being developed into a new television series at SYFY starring Adriyan Rae, Tom Rozon, and Paul du Toit.

If you haven't pre-ordered this first issue, today's your cut off so don't miss out.

The second pick for this week is QUANTUM AND WOODY #1 (of 5) from Valiant Entertainment. This new miniseries is being written by Christopher Hastings, art by Ryan Browne, colors by Ruth Redmond, and letters by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. If you're a variant cover fanatic, this first issue has six that I'm aware of, but there could be more. You can check out the variants in the slider to the right.

There's something about Quantum and Woody as characters that just draw me to them. They shouldn't work as a pair, but every creative team that's tackled them for Valiant has brought something new and entertaining and so I'm brought back to them each and every time. I dropped off of Valiant when they had their editorial and ownership shake up and didn't think I'd come back to them, but I've been wrong before. With the launch of the new BLOODSHOT series I've been picking up all of the new titles and giving them a shot which means I'm just buying and reading more comics. I'm cool with that, and you should definitely take a shot on this issue if you have not already. Don't assume your local comic shop will have copies, or all of the variants. Get into the shop today and get your copy reserved.

The next book on the list is a little unknown to me, FRANKENSTEIN UNDONE #1 from Dark Horse Comics. I say this book is a little unknown to me, but the creative team is far from it with it being written by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie, art by Ben Stenbeck, and colors by Brennan Wagner and Dave Stewart.

This miniseries is the prequel to FRANKENSTEIN UNDERGROUND which is a miniseries I missed out on for unknown reasons. According to Multiversity Comics's Mignolaversity, this miniseries will see Frankenstein's monster struggling to live with himself in the wake of the events from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein novel.

If you're like me and missed out on the previous miniseries and one-shot, don't worry - this is a prequel. Don't go with the excuse, "I haven't read the previous stories." You know who Frankenstein's Monster is, right? What more do you need?
